About

Among a wide-breadth of other research projects, the laboratory of Dr. Wael Jarjour investigates the female sex-bias in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), the aberrances of immune cells in autoimmunity, the effects of exercise on lupus and the role of Regulatory T cells (Tregs) in Myositis and Sjögren’s syndrome.

Our Team

Wael Jarjour, MD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Jarjour is the Director of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology at the OSU Medical Center. Dr. Jarjour's specialty interests include rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, Lupus, connective tissue diseases and osteoarthritis with research focused on autoimmunity. Dr. Jarjour obtained his medical degree at the Damascus University School of Medicine and completed his research training with the NIH.

Nicholas Young, PhD

Research Scientist

Dr. Young completed both of his graduate and undergraduate degrees at OSU. He obtained his Ph.D. in Immunology and completed his post-doctoral research in Dr. Jarjour's lab. Dr. Young is now a research scientist in our lab involved in many of our projects.

Takuma Wada, MD, PhD

Visiting Scholar

Dr. Wada is a visiting scholar from Saitama, Japan. He is a licensed rheumatologist in Japan with a background in the epigenetics of rheumatoid arthritis, especially in histone modifications. Dr. Wada will be with us for 2-3 years and will investigate the role of microparticles in autoimmune disease.

Lai-Chu Wu, DPhil

Collaborating Principal Investigator

Dr. Wu is an associate professor in the department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology and the Department of Internal Medicine at the OSUWMC. She completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford. In her lab, Dr. Wu is interested in research related to breast cancer and autoimmunity. Dr. Wu is a vital collaborator with several of our research projects.

William Willis, PhD

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Dr. Willis completed his undergraduate degree at OSU and graduated with a B.S. in chemistry. He completed his Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences at the Ohio State University.  Dr. Willis is currently focusing on fundemental biochemical pathways involved in both inflammatory and autoimmune disease processes.

Stacy Ardoin, MD

Associate Professor

Dr. Ardoin obtained her medical degree from the OSU College of Medicine. Dr. Ardoin is the acting Interim Cheif of Rheumatology at Nationwide Children's Hospital and a board certified pediatric and adult rhematologist. She is interested in cardiovascular disease research in patients with lupus. She is also interested in neuropsychiatric SLE and the transition from pediatric- to-adult-centered medical care.

Giancarlo Valiente

MD/PhD Student

Giancarlo is an MD/PhD student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2011 and joined our lab in February 2015. He is currently investigating the role of specific immune cells and their role in the pathogenesis of lupus. Giancarlo is very interested in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology as potential physician-scientist career paths.

Kai Quin, MD

Rheumatology Fellow

Dr. Quin is a rheumatology fellow in the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology. His focus is tissue-based immunology. He uses immunofluorescence and RNAscope techniques to study autoimmune disease.

Perry Blough

Student Research Assistant

Perry is an undergraduate student at OSU majoring in biology. He is currently working on lupus mouse models and the immune mechanisms of lupus.

Armin Munir

Student Research Assistant

Armin is an undergraduate student at OSU majoring in biology. Like Perry. she is also working on lupus mouse models and the immune mechanisms of lupus.

Jeffery Hampton

Research Assistant

Jeff graduated from The Ohio State University in 2013 with a B.S. in Microbiology, and has been with us since May of 2014. Jeff is very interested in pursuing a career as a physician which sparks his interest in our lab. Jeff currently helps manage our lab and and assists with multiple research projects, with a primary focus in T-cell biology.
